- Stator
-
- The torque
- converter transmits
- and increases the
- engine torque, or
- twisting force, to
- the transmission
- gearbox input
- shaft. The torque
- converter is made
- up of three pieces:
- an impeller, a
- stator, and a
- turbine. The
- impeller is turned
- by the engine
- output shaft and
- causes the
- transmission fluid
- in the torque
- converter to move.
- The turbine turns
- the input shaft to
- the gears. The
- stator is a fixed
- piece that fits
- between the
- impeller and the
- turbine.
-
- The torque
- converter is filled
- with transmission
- fluid which is
- moved via the
- impeller blades.
- The moving oil
- passes through the
- stator vanes and
- then moves the
- turbine blades. As
- the impeller spins,
- the turbine speed
- increases to match
- that of the
- impeller. Fluid
- coupling between
- the engine and the
- gearbox smoothes
- out speed changes.
