  3. The torque
  4. converter transmits
  5. and increases the
  6. engine torque, or
  7. twisting force, to
  8. the transmission
  9. gearbox input
  10. shaft.  The torque
  11. converter is made
  12. up of three pieces:
  13. an impeller, a
  14. stator, and a
  15. turbine.  The
  16. impeller is turned
  17. by the engine
  18. output shaft and
  19. causes the
  20. transmission fluid
  21. in the torque
  22. converter to move. 
  23. The turbine turns
  24. the input shaft to
  25. the gears.  The
  26. stator is a fixed
  27. piece that fits
  28. between the
  29. impeller and the
  30. turbine.

  32. The torque
  33. converter is filled
  34. with transmission
  35. fluid which is
  36. moved via the
  37. impeller blades. 
  38. The moving oil
  39. passes through the
  40. stator vanes and
  41. then moves the
  42. turbine blades.  As
  43. the impeller spins,
  44. the turbine speed
  45. increases to match
  46. that of the
  47. impeller.  Fluid
  48. coupling between
  49. the engine and the
  50. gearbox smoothes
  51. out speed changes.
